The Right to be Angry

Have you noticed how much anger there is in the community? Listen to talkback radio and hear the anger there. If you have the stomach to listen to shock jocks like Alan Jones you will hear plenty there. There is road rage and a level of anger and assaults in our city centres, often alcohol-fuelled, which is unacceptable in a civilized society.

Recently, one of our regular bloggers on The Political Sword, NormanK, wrote a comment about ‘The Right to be Angry’.

He argued it was “…the theme of the current Abbott-led Opposition and many neo-cons around the world. Whilst it is not quite a three-word slogan, their promise to the electorate seems to be:
Day after day, in every way, we will reaffirm your RIGHT TO BE ANGRY.
The Right to be Angry over electricity prices.
The Right to be Angry over asylum seekers taking your jobs and living high on the hog.
The Right to be Angry over government debt, wasteful spending, water management, welfare cheats, public-purse-exploiting politicians, military tribunals, flood waters, food prices, petrol prices, share prices, bank profits, and the list goes on.

“In fact we have Abbott & Co's blessing to be angry about anything we don't like or don't understand. It is our Right.
And nothing feeds a good bout of anger like a healthy dose of fear - a stock-in-trade of regressives.”

That struck a respondent chord. The more I reflected on it, the more it seemed to portray the approach of Tony Abbott and the Coalition and their fellow travellers in the MSM. [more]

Think back over the last three years. Over and again Abbott and his ministers have sought to make the public angry about the Government’s performance, seldom acknowledging any success or laudable move, instead insisting that the public had the right to be angry at what Abbott painted as ‘debt and deficit’, ‘waste and mismanagement’, incompetence at managing projects; and angry at ‘the most incompetent government in Australian history’. While some criticism might be legitimate – no government is faultless – the intensity and persistence of the criticism fuelled anger in the electorate that almost defeated the Government at last year’s election.

While no one will deny the right of taxpayers to be angry about incompetence or fraudulent behaviour in any public utility or in any government – local, state or federal – inflaming anger in the electorate when that is not deserved is corrosive to national unity and the nation’s sense of purpose. Yet, as NormanK points out, the federal Coalition encourages the people to be angry about events and circumstances over which no government has any control, such as floods, and food and petrol prices, bank profits and military tribunals.

There are countless examples of the deliberate encouragement of anger by politicians and journalists. Take Andrew Bolt’s tirade against Julia Gillard and the Government when, at the beginning of the flood crisis, she pledged a million dollars to the Queensland Government. He belittled her and the level of the contribution and compared it with the donations Australia made to Pakistan for their floods and Indonesia at the time of its tsunami. He must have known that this was but an initial contribution, and that much, much more would follow, as it has. But that did not deter him from his vicious slur and vitriolic condemnation, echoed by sycophantic followers on his blog. Indeed it is these very people that Bolt stirs to mounting anger every time he attacks Gillard. He tells them with his words that they have ‘The Right to be Angry’. He paints it as a right, even when no such right exists.

Tony Abbott stirred up anger over the floods by suggesting somehow that lack of dams – which he labeled a ‘dam phobia’ – might be the cause, even as his side of politics opposed recent proposed dam construction. Now he is stirring anger over the flood levy.

This penchant for always looking for someone to blame for any misadventure, any adverse turn of events, any move that might be disadvantageous to some, is malignant. It is a cancer that is spreading throughout our society and threatening to kill its victim.

The US provides us with frightening examples of the toxic effect of anger. The recent atrocity in Arizona has been attributed in part to the poisonous political atmosphere there where the repeated use of firearms metaphors suggested that people take up arms and target Democrats, and ‘reload’ until the enemy is defeated.

Take a look at what Arun Gupta had to say on AlterNet on 12 January in a piece titled Hate and Violence Are Encoded in the DNA of the American Right in commenting on the surfeit of political murders during the Obama years, in contrast to the Bush era. Gupta comments: “This stark contrast demands an explanation for why there have been so many political murder sprees in less than two years. The answer can be found within the strain of reactionary politics that dominates the American Right. The Right thrives on mobilizing group resentment, and the range of its targets over the last 50 years is astonishing: gays and lesbians, African Americans, Latinos, feminists, welfare recipients, reproductive-rights activists, Muslims, undocumented immigrants, government officials, criminals, liberals, antiwar activists, organized labor.

“The group resentment is fomented and stoked within the right-wing echo chamber, in increasingly apocalyptic terms. With swaths of the public alienated and looking for easy answers in a time of epic joblessness, they latch onto scapegoats that demagogues like Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage provide. As a result millions of alienated Americans are convinced their problems and the national malaise is the fault of Mexicans, liberals, abortion providers and homosexuals. Politicians willing to exploit this hatred can find a large and passionate base. Because extremism stands out in our media-saturated culture, those voices and politicians who are the most outrageous tend to be the most successful. This creates a politics that makes compromise and reasoned discourse all but impossible. Add to that a political system dominated by corporate money, which makes addressing social ills all but impossible, and you have a public seething with anger but with no ready outlet.”

Australian conservatives can see how well this strategy works – they have a working laboratory in the US. We have our own Glen Becks – Alan Jones, Piers Akerman and Andrew Bolt are obvious clones. If you think that is an exaggeration, listen to them, read what they write. Compare it with Glen Beck’s utterances.

Writing in The New York Times on January 9, Paul Krugman says in his piece, Climate of Hate, that he was not surprised at the Arizona shooting of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and the killing of six people. He explained: "Last spring Politico.com reported on a surge in threats against members of Congress, which were already up by 300 percent. A number of the people making those threats had a history of mental illness – but something about the current state of America has been causing far more disturbed people than before to act out their illness by threatening, or actually engaging in, political violence. And there’s not much question what has changed. As Clarence Dupnik, the sheriff responsible for dealing with the Arizona shootings, put it, it’s ‘the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business.’ The vast majority of those who listen to that toxic rhetoric stop short of actual violence, but some, inevitably, cross that line.

“It’s important to be clear here about the nature of our sickness. It’s not a general lack of ‘civility’, the favorite term of pundits who want to wish away fundamental policy disagreements. Politeness may be a virtue, but there’s a big difference between bad manners and calls, explicit or implicit, for violence; insults aren’t the same as incitement. The point is that there’s room in a democracy for people who ridicule and denounce those who disagree with them; there isn’t any place for eliminationist rhetoric, for suggestions that those on the other side of a debate must be removed from that debate by whatever means necessary. And it’s the saturation of our political discourse – and especially our airwaves – with eliminationist rhetoric that lies behind the rising tide of violence.”

As mentioned in the previous piece, on the EzKool website in a January 10 article: Rush Limbaugh Continues Without Missing A Beat Ezra Grant had this to say in the aftermath of the Arizona killings: “But politics in America is nothing new. It’s been around since this country’s inception. But something about this cycle of politics is different. Ask any member of Congress and they will tell you that they have not seen things this bad in quite a long time. So what made it this bad?” Grant answers his own question: “It’s the Sarah Palins, the Rush Limbaughs, the Glenn Becks, those radio and television personalities who are more concerned about dividing the country to fatten their paychecks, than they are about working together to bring the country together. These personalities are financially invested and vested in keeping this country divided.”

The way to divide a country is to evoke anger among some of the people against others, against authority, against the government. Tell them they have ‘The Right to be Angry’ about this or that, whether or not such anger is reasonable, and even when it isn’t, a reason for anger can simply be invented.

We have not reached the forlorn state in which America now wallows, but some conservatives here, both in parliament and in the media, are following down the dangerous American track, inciting anger and resentment among sectors of the population towards Labor governments for trumped-up reasons that do not stand up to scrutiny.

Any government that is incompetent or fraudulent, or makes poor decisions, or lies to the people, or fails to do what is best for the electorate, deserves criticism, and at times condemnation. But a government that is performing well, albeit not always perfectly, does not deserve to be pilloried with spurious accusations, illegitimate criticisms, biased opinion, vitriolic talk, and the people stirred into unjustified anger. Fomenting the Right to be Angry when that is unjustified is a malicious strategy that has no place in our democracy. We ought to expose it whenever it rears its ugly and poisonous head.

What do you think?

5/02/2011Good Morning Ad Thankyou for a very enjoyable new article, this morning. I love your words and enjoy reading your pieces very, very, much.
Fomenting the Right to be Angry when that is unjustified is a malicious strategy that has no place in our democracy. We ought to expose it whenever it rears its ugly and poisonous head.
Excellent summary Ad, I agree with everything you have said. There is far to much incited anger in the world today, throwing stones and rocks in Cairo, the videos are terrifying. I don't think we have a right to be angry not hostile anyway, a difference of opinion, raised voice or strong words ok, sure, but (
a reason for anger can simply be invented
) we should control our anger and tempers that is how I was brought up anyway. Have a nice day Ad

5/02/2011Hi Talk Turkey Thankyou for your reply to my call for followers for Ad Astra on our newly installed Twitter Button.
Lyn, When I learn HOW to tweet I'll start doing it I suppose, but I don't understand it atm. That should give you an idea of how much idea I haven't.
That's ok, Talk Turkey thanks for letting us know, I know exactly how you feel, I was the same, but I was first prompted to join up last year because of The Poll Bludger as he would tweet the link on new posts on the polls, great during the election.. I had to get Hillbilly to help me last year, and then I was successful in tweeting Hillbilly, but I am still daunted by the program making me unsure of what I am doing. It's just what people want to be bothered with or not, and more frequently its' not, with all this stuff available now we do have to wonder what is necessary. But I still want an Ipad, which will supersede my desktop and my laptop, I have a mobile phone that stays in the draw, the lady across the road wants me, to help her send text messages, I haven't go a clue how and can't be bothered learning either. As 2353 said he/she is more than happy with what he/she operates already, we all appreciate everyone coming here to TPS, and are quite contented and happy to leave things as they are anyway. You will see, I have my umberreyumdi this morning, we are getting the heavy rain, after effects from the cyclone. Cheers

5/02/2011Talk Turkey I told you I had my umberreyumdi and then forgot to grab it on the way. Cheers

5/02/2011Ad astra Thanks for another great article. It is further proof (if it was needed) that you are indeed the headline act in this little play and actors such as myself are but bit players written in to assist in the advancement of the plot. I appreciate the accreditation and am touched by the dedication. At the time of Abbott making his comment that the new Gillard government was "illegitimate", I had a feeling that this was the beginning of something which would prove detrimental to the fabric of our society. Some circles rejoiced in the fact that Abbott abandoned the expression in light of legal ramifications/implications but he is a canny fellow and he knew the seeds had already been sown. Now we have persistent remarks being made about a government "without a mandate" or wrongly in power due to the traitorous acts of a couple of Independents. It would seem to matter not to these individuals that Labor was the party which won the most seats and the Conservatives can only reach a majority by bundling together the seats of four or five separate parties. The Right to be Angry was granted to rusted-on Regressives by Abbott declaring "we was robbed". We are but one or two headlines away from accusations of vote-rigging or ballot-box tampering. This would then bring us perilously close to anger in the streets and we know where that can lead. I may be wearing my philosophical allegiance on my sleeve but it does seem that only one side of the political debate is showing a willingness to squeeze the life out of an incumbent government's ability to govern - with the express aim of bringing it down. Would the word "illegitimate" get another public airing if the Opposition were to assume power by these means? It would by me. I must say I found the following statement chilling in its accuracy :
This penchant for always looking for someone to blame for any misadventure, any adverse turn of events, any move that might be disadvantageous to some, is malignant. It is a cancer that is spreading throughout our society and threatening to kill its victim.
Let us hope that there are still sufficient socially responsible people of generous spirit that they may overcome this modern-day malady.

5/02/2011Lyn, I'm glad I'm not the only one who finds it difficult to drive a mobile phone :) I tried and ended up ditching the thing which I got in case I got stuck in the middle of nowhere (which is everywhere here) and needed to yell for help. However, the one time I needed to call for help was the time the phone decided to malfunction and I had to rely on a passing motorist. I have sort of mastered the computer but my skills there are limited at best so I haven't bothered to venture into twittering etc. NormanK, Wonderful to have you back and so glad you survived Yasi's fury more or less intact. Everytime I see or hear Abbott open his great big mouth I can't but think it is a pity he is never personally in the line of fire when mother nature exercises her right to be angry. He seems to crawl out from under his log to stir up a bit more anger amongst the citizens before retreating to his shelter once again while his conned non-thinkers shower the nation with angry fireballs aided by a thoughtless media which is largely headed by a power-hungry, shrivelled-up old prune. Yes, let us hope that there are sufficient socially responsible people of generous spirit who may overcome this malady.

5/02/2011AA, Tones is in Tully “inspecting” the damage caused by Cyclone Yasi. However, never to miss a trick, he hasn’t forgotten to bring his collection tin for the Bury the Levy appeal. But, in the main drag, Butler Street, Tones shakes his tin in one face too many. Giuseppe, a migrant from the old country, is totally outraged by Tones’ selfish and inappropriate behaviour, especially at such a sensitive time. Sing along in chorus with Giuseppe as he channels his righteous anger into the alternative lyrics to the Joe Dolce classic, “Shaddap You Face”. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFacWGBJ_cs :- ( When I was a boy just about the eighth-a grade Mama used to say: "When the rain-a falls Whether on the just Or the shiny-bums Giuseppe always-a have it sussed!" :- ( Boy, it make-a me sick all the t'ing I gotta do My Bath-a-room has-a no bricks The tin-roof’s in Timbuck-a-too :- ( Boy, it make-a me sick Especially at a time like this To see Tones try to a-make A few-a lousy bucks For his Bury the Levy stitch :- ( So I said to Tones down in Tully town: “What's-a matter you? 5/02/2011Ad Astra, A timely and perspicacious piece of writing. So lucky are we at The Political Sword to have someone to lead the debate in the direction it needs to go, and to have the courage to stand up and say what needs to be said. The Shock Jocks, and their ilk in print, on radio and TV, aren't merely 'Entertainers', as they disingenuously procalim. Was Tokyo Rose an 'Entertainer'? I guess you could say, "Yes", but you could almost as certainly say, "No". She was a propagandist and polemicist. Just as are our own breed of 'Tokyo Roses'. Which proposition I believe can be borne out when you consider the following definition and derivation of the word, 'polemic':
polemic noun 1 a controversial speech or piece of writing that fiercely attacks or defends an idea, opinion, etc. 2 writing or oratory of this sort. 3 someone who argues in this way. adj (also polemical) relating to or involving polemics or controversy. polemically adverb. polemicist noun. ETYMOLOGY: 17c: from Greek polemikos relating to war, from polemos war.
I especially like the last bit which draws our attention back to the point that 'they' are at war with 'us'. The polemicists want to destroy the Australian 'Fair Go' ethos, and replace it with the American NeoConservative 'God, Guns and Dog Eat Dog' paradigm that is parlayed daily by those individuals who have been mentioned in Ad Astra's blog. Pity help the Western World if they prevail. Especially when Mother Nature trumps us all with her point of view. Which is why it is so important to keep up the fight against them. Even when they do have as charismatic and persuasive a spokesman as Tony Abbott. The Devil, or the Anti-Christ, you know, was supposed to have been born around the time of Mr Abbott, or so I was told at Sunday School, after Church on Sunday.(Just thought I'd throw that one in, seeing as how Mr Abbott himself spins a lot of his polemic out of the Bible). :)

5/02/2011I wonder if there are two different events playing out here. Firstly, the bully element. It always seems to be the bully in the playground, the workplace or on the committee that gets what they want. For anyone to get to the position of Leader of a political party, they have to be able to get their own way (usually thorough persuasion, alliances and bluntly knowing where the skeletons - not "Hillbilly" or "Feral" ones - are buried). The have usually demonstrated that they will use all the information they possess to if considered necessary bring a rival down. I've recently read Peter Fitzsimons (sp?) book "Beasley" which apart from being a huge lug of a thing to read on the train to work demonstrated that even Kim Beasley, who seemed to be almost universally liked as a person could play the game with the best of them, calculate the numbers and if necessary bury the opposition to his plans. Remember the way Abbott became Opposition Leader, he destabilised Turnbull (including the Godwin Grech thing) until Turnbull had no option other than to resign. Abbott then split the vote for the new leader causing a run off which he won by one vote. This method of operation was not new, on a number of occasions he acted as the bully boy for Howard when Howard had no logical explanation for a particular act and don't forget he spent a lot of years with the "Brothers" of the Catholic Church - an organisation that has a particular slant on the world that probably isn't in keeping with current day values who then tries to force the views of the leadership on the followers. (Actually I feel sorry for the majority of religious and members of the Catholic Church, they really do try to make the world a better place - but that's a post for another time). Secondly, there is the "born to rule" mentality. This sort of links into the "Bully" discussed above. In my experience, those that are even just relatively conservative believe that they are doing the right thing (for a variety of reasons including "this is the way we've done it for years", "what will happen if it doesn't work", "we have always only used trusted methods" and so on). There seems to be a disconnect where those that are conservative by nature cannot grasp a new concept until they see it working successfully - then they own it through bullying. They claim they implemented the concept when in reality they actively interfered with the concept until it was proven - then "promote", "own" and "protect" the work as their own. As a part of the bullying culture, they like being told "what to do" by an "guru". Without getting religious or political, witness how Abbott operates - criticism without alternatives. Its the same as the radio talkback people - Jones, Mitchell, Bolt, King, Sattler and so on - they find a "fact" and feed it to their adoring audience who repeat it ad nauseum to friends, enemies and anyone else that will listen. The reality is that the "talkback" format doesn't rate anywhere as well as it used to. I saw somethign the other day that suggested that Mitchell has under 90,000 listeners in a market of over 4 million. I posted yesterday about Bolt claiming the NBN was on power poles and therefore not as safe as Wifi. Complete crap but the Bolt devotees will sprout it for years yet (even when the new NBN ditch is being dug in their footpath). They also gravitate to organisations such as Hillsong, Pell's Catholic Church and so on - once again someone tells them what to believe and they do it. Look at the hatred those who leave religious groups such as Scientology seem to have for the organisation and those still in the group. I'm (unfortunately) old enough to remember when Amway and so on were being sold with (sorry) religious fervour. This will make you millions they claimed. The catch with the program was that those at the top, who told those at the bottom what to do, made millions and the business model meant that sooner or later everyone in the country would have been a distributor so those that came in later (on a promise) made little if any money - got dejected (yes I knew a few "ex-Distributors") and most of them then realised they were royally conned in the first place. How do the progressives overcome it? By putting out the alternative view - such as blog sites like this, Grog, Possum and so on. Furphy can only win against fact for so long. Sooner or later, those that like to be led by the nose will turn their attention to something else (needlework or alternate remedies anyone?) in the hope of replacing the conservatives that are literally dying out due to age. Hate (aka bullying) is a known commodity, wins a few battles but usually not the war - but the progressive forces in our western society have to learn to "market" as well as those that don't want to progress. Occasionally a fact gets in the way of the good story (witness Abbotts recent "anti-flood levy tax" on Liberal Party members) and some start to evaluate if they want to be led by the nose any more. Here endeth the lesson - sorry it's so long.

5/02/2011Another thing you've got to say about those type of people is that they are pugnacious. Knock them down, like Tony Abbott after E-mailGate this week, and they get right back up again. Dust themselves off and get straight back on their Hobby Horse. Not only that, but they head right into the centre of whatever controversy they have created and punch on from there. Such as Abbott has today with his trip to Townsville, Queensland. His aim, of course, is to turn Queenslander against Queenslander now. He is pitting those who have been affected by the Floods and the Cyclone and who need help, against those who have not and are resenting having to pay for those who are. Not only that, but he is disingenuously characterising the cuts that the government will have to make to worthy intitiatives, as useless 'fat' in the Budget.

5/02/2011NormanK Thank you for your kind comments and your observations. I too fear that the Abbott/Coalition attitude of continual denouncement of the Government, and their clear intention to render this nation ungovernable, something I wrote about last year, is not just corrosive, it threatens our democracy. It seems though that the independents are awake to this strategy, and are even more determined to keep Abbott at bay. They are the socially responsible individuals that are shielding us from the disaster of an Abbott-lead Government. We should show them our gratitude.

5/02/2011 Bouquets to: Lyn, for her lovely new Gravatar, (plus plus plus) Janice for making me feel not quite alone in my ineptitudes; NormanK for inspiring this thread, Jason for alerting us to the imminent ABC Board Appointments And All Yous staunch Swordsfolks of course, But most especially to Ad astra, for this brilliant forum, and these (last two particularly) splendid threads, and now, most of all, for his in-principle acceptance of OUR nomination of him as an ABC Board Member. We have just 6 days to get the application in. I ask that you all help here. Be it noted, I have no special skills in framing such an application, indeed it is probably a simple fact that Ad astra himself is most qualified to pen it - a nice circle, with at its core the man's very qualities, the ones that make him an ideal choice for the position. But there is a let here - Ad astra has said, and I ask you to read his posts of the last few days, that he wouldn't dream of putting himself up - Well he hasn't, WE have, and BTW I was not the first jic that's what you thought, others have suggested it before I'm sure. I know that all goodwillians on this site want him to succeed to the Board. Even, I would hope, a majority of the other few. That's because he has the best most appropriate quality of all, the will to reconcile. I do fear that I personally lack the skills (and especially the focus) to project Aa's qualifications to their best advantage, but I acknowledge at least some responsibility in his decision not to oppose, at least, a formal application to be made in his name. (I'm being circumspect here, I REALLY want everyone feeling good about this.) Anyway I’ll help where I can. It seems to me we have a unique, and quite enchanting situation here. Most of Yous (though not moi) are anonymous and want to stay so I guess, but at the same time many of us know Ad astra by his writings far better than we would know your local MP for example, and we KNOW he merits vast respect, for his moderate pronouncements, his every-day dedication to TPS, you know I could go on. So even if your real name couldn’t be used, which I guess would sort of invalidate it from a technical point of view, yet still, what a lot of recommendations Ad astra has due to him, if you-all feel strongly enough about Aa, but more, about the standard of the ABC recently, and more still, for the decency of this nation, to do what you do best, write a post, or better still send a reference direct to him at hsi email address, and if you have any special skills in framing an application, please make it known. As Ad astra said, it’ll be interesting anyway. But who better? And why not? The Sword in the ABC . . . Win-Win, surely. I’d ask you to read my last few posts yesterday about it, on a previous thread. I can’t even remember all I wrote there but I know it was all about this. Swordsfolks I have not even asked Ad yet if he will/willn’t be happy to frame his own application, see I know I helped get him into this so I do feel partly responsible . . . but I think he’d probably be better at pushing his own barrow (cf his lawnmower) than I could be, and I also think there’s others who would be too. But I’m quite determined to see it happen, however. Depending on your responses, I’ll be thinking hard. For me anyway. Please, write Ad astra a reference. You can email it direct to him, of course, and I’m sure if you wanted to you and Ad could find a way of identifying yourself only to those with a proper right to know. But I’m sure, well I suppose!, there are plenty of people in Ad’s life who are there for him in this anyway. I just want him on a board of what I might eventually one day again be able to think of as OUR ABC.

5/02/2011Excellent post ad Astra. I can remember, when living in Canada in the 70s, early 80s, the evangelical preachers on American TV & radio stirring up the crowds...preaching hate...inciting anger. And those late night talkback radio guys who were seen as the sleaze balls back then...huddled in their studios sirring up white supremacists...pushing every button possible to get attention. The 1988 film 'Talk Radio' by Oliver Stone captured the anger, claustrophobia & possible consequences so well. Obviously Australia has it's own King of Stir in Allan Jones...but compared to Rush Limbaugh in America he is a marshmallow. Interestingly, sadly, hate & anger sell. If done craftily. And usually this lot have to have good lawyers & a hefty corporate mogul behind them. And newspapers, blogs, cable news channels etc. that plug them. Are apologists for them. It's so easy for Abbott the naturally loopy, brash, split personality, oft moral infant, attention-seeking, bitter & angry, ambitious Mr. Negabore to feed into this lot. They work off each other like porn stars & cable television or seedy movie cinemas. A natural fit. Made for each other. Unfortunately they won't go away...just evolve...or some might say, devolve. But it's essential that their hate, misinformation & too oft lies/distortions are countered...and the likes of you are doin' a great job doin' so. Oh but for a Huffington Post in this country eh? N'

He's up North today, I suspect trying to neutralize the anger he caused with his 'donate to the Liberals' addition to his 'fight the levy' email. He will need to do a lot more than cleaning up the debris, or mouthing a few platitudinous words to wipe that sleazy slate clean.

5/02/2011FS Thank you for your kind remarks and you incisive analysis. The shock jocks, and their TV and journalistic equivalents, in their disingenuous 'polemicist as entertainer' guise, are dangerous operatives. They would have us believe that their intent is innocent, all in the pursuit of entertaining the populace, but they know exactly what they are doing. In the US, they are bald-faced in pursuit of their conservative goals; here they think we are gullible enough to not notice. I guess many don't; those of us who do need to speak up.

5/02/2011Does Tony Abbott realise that he sounds as if he is saying, "Like I care", when he says, "We've had floods before, we'll have floods again, we've had cyclones before, we'll have cyclones again...".

NormanK

5/02/2011FS No, I doubt that he realises how dismissive it sounds. If the statement came from a wizened farmer or a stalwart determined grandmother who has sat through a number of cyclones, it would be accepted as pragmatic country philosophy. Coming from someone who flew in three days after the event, worked his iron muscles on half a tree and flew out again, it sounds like citified grand-standing. As does "Australians have been through enough hardship". Not all of us have, mate, and you wouldn't know hardship if it leapt up and bit you.

5/02/20112353 Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Your mention of bullying is apt. We have seen bullying since we were kids in the schoolyard, but now it occurs even more maliciously on the Internet, Facebook and so on. The central element of bullying is demeaning the individual by deriding their appearance, questioning their ability, their achievements, their motives, their social skills. Moreover their purpose is to persuade others to their view. This is just what Tony Abbott and his senior ministers do every day. They want the electorate to believe the Gillard Government is illegitimate, incompetent, incapable of managing money and projects, unable ever to bring in a surplus budget, and so on it goes. This is bullying, and is intentional. It is designed to encourage others, journalists and the voters, to join in the bullying until the Government Is bullied out of office. We see journalists antagonistic to the Government indulging in bare-faced bullying; 3AW's Neil Mitchell was at it the other day. Matthew Franklin is another. Until this is recognized by fair-minded people and vigorously opposed it will continue. It was good to see Julia Gillard pulling Mitchell up, and Franklin too. All of us who seek fair play should call bullying for what it is whenever we see it occurring.

5/02/2011Nasking Yes, cartoonists have done this for years, at times cruelly. But they are cartoonists, and that's how they work, and how they are expected to make a living. What I object to is serious journalists behaviouring as if they too are cartoonists, as David Horton pointed out in his recent article on The Drum (see the last post). They ought to leave cartoons to the cartoonists, and stick to objective journalism. Ridiculing politicians via verbal cartoons leads to disrespect for our leaders, and rude behavior which is unbecoming, for the journalist as well as the politician. What is even more annoying is that for too many journalists, disrespect is selective. Reflect how rude and aggressive some News Limited journalists are to Julia Gillard, and how easy they are on Tony Abbott, no matter how bad his gaffes, of which there have been plenty. It seems to me that rudeness, aggressiveness and bullying among journalists is inversely proportional to the level of respect the journalist has for the politician.

I urge the PM to exercise stringently her right not to speak with individuals nor organisations which are less than properly respectful of her office. 6/02/2011HFS We do feel empathy with you in that heat wave. We get it hot in SA but it's mostly dry heat. It's horrible when it's humid, and you've had it hot and humid in spades. Relief today. The obscene Abbortt must be tying himself in knots over climate change being crap on one hand and on t'other siding with those who reckon we need an disaster fund now (and of course Labor should have had it done within hours of taking office, like the dams that we should have had built even if the Coalition opposed them at the time)because erm disasters seem to be getting so much more common these days . . . but climate change, nahhh, crap . . . erm . . . Stop the Trees! Urrgghhh. There's Abbortt now with Cassidy actually asking a few proper questions on the Levy and the Funding and his nasty little plea for anti-levy-campaign donations. ABBORTT IS NEAR TO FINISHED. HOORAY! JUST READ THE RECENT POSTS AND ARTICLES. HE'S DONE. HE'S DITHERED. The media have turned on him and he is beyond saving. I will delight in watching his slow but inevitable decline. The longer the better really, as the Liberal Party becomes increasingly obviously directionless. "This is a bad Government" says he to Cassidy. Cassidy has abandoned him, Oakes has abandoned him, I am watching his fall. Julia Gillard is smacking the Bongionos and clones in the teeth with their interruptions and snide questions. The tide has turned. Savva is pretty rancid. "It's such a piddling little levy" she says, (so why introduce it she implied), but if so why oppose it so hatefully? "Julia Gillard is I - I - I - Me - Me - Me" says Niki. We really need to focus on and rate these people on their pronouncements. REALLY hold them to account. You bet the pollies and the journos are watching political blogsites now. RUPERT is watching political blogsites now! And more and more. Dennis Atkins seems OK and the other woman (?) is decent. Julia Gillard:"I've been appp-solutely amazed . . ." (at Abbortt's hamfistedness) Go Girl. Loughnane and wife are a chortle for the Left now too. I bet nearly every Swordie's watching Insiders today. Can't wait for first Question Time. Let me remind you that Ad astra has consented to being nominated for a position on the ABC Board, application must be in by this Friday coming. If you have an anedote about him or a point of view about the value and relevance of his work on TPS which will help to achieve this, now's the time to tell it. 6/02/2011Hi Ad Ad I thought "The Insiders" was a slight improvement this morning, Barrie Cassidy seemed a tiny bit more balanced. The introductory videos were rigged in a way to make Mr Abbott's comments appear and sound better than they actually were, in cutting these clips in this way, Mr Abbotts comments were distorted in his favour. Barrie made Mr Abbott look stupid, two particular questions that I noted: Mr Abbott has said it is easy for the Government to make cuts out of the budget, when asked what cuts Mr Abbott would make, he said they will make a package available in coming days. Mr Abbott said it is not easy for the him to make the budget cuts Big Gotcha Barrie Cassidy asked "did you read the email asking for donations before signing it" Mr Abbott said he read the text of a letter, The Liberal Party added the request for donations. Mr Abbott is the Liberal Party Big Gotcha Barrie Cassidy pressed further on the email Mr Abbott said "Look Barrie I am not going to get into the game you are playing. Small Gotcha Mr Abbott said three times "this is a Bad Government, getting worse" he said the Government is so very finely balanced. I said "would it be different for you Mr Abbott if you get the Independents" My Gotcha Nikki Savva, well I think she is very well experienced and has great knowledge, about whether Julia Gillard is wooden or not, because her own whole demeanour is wooden, sorry Nikki to be personal, but your hair looks like combed tooth picks. The flood Levy is such a piddling little levy she says. Well I say "Piddling Little" has caused a whole big piddling lot of trouble. Mr Abbott has another new Slogan: "Fair Go For Families" one thing wrong, it has four words. There were "More Stop The" uttered, but I missed those words, I had to stuff the chicken for lunch. I thought everyone would be pleased to know, that Mr Abbott would much rather be in his position, than Julia Gillards, this is important because Mr Abbott said so. Thankyou Talk Turkey, I think you have summed up fantastic:
This is a bad Government" says he to Cassidy. Cassidy has abandoned him, Oakes has abandoned him, I am watching his fall. Julia Gillard is smacking the Bongionos and clones in the teeth with their interruptions and snide questions. The tide has turned. Savva is pretty rancid. 6/02/2011Lyn and Talk Turkey, Great summaries of Insiders. The woman who you were referring to on the 'Left' side of the couch was Lenore Taylor of The Sydney Morning Herald. She used to be at The Australian but left in disgust. Which must mean she is a very smart woman with a lot of integrity. She fair smacked Niki Savva out of the ballpark this morning whenever Ms Savva started getting uppity and trying to run Coalition Talking Points instead of considered commentary. Lenore's no Labor stooge either, she'll let the ALP have it with both barrels when she thinks they deserve it, which sometimes they most certainly do. As does any political party. Which is why I like her so much, even if she was the one who virtually killed off Kevin Rudd as PM with her story that he was going to abandon Climate Change action. Still, he was the one who made the decision... All in all, not as bad a start to the Insiders year as I was fearing. As lyn outlined, Barrie's interview of One Trick Tony was more probing than usual last year. I wonder if the journalists who actually got to have holidays over the Xmas/New Year period, like Barrie, took the time to read some of the blogs and Drum Unleashed, etc., and got the message we have all been banging on about wrt the 'Softball' interviews of the Opposition. I hope so. I also hope Barrie realises that he got more newsworthy information out of Abbott by going in a bit harder than he ever did by just letting Tony trot out his Talking Points and attack lines. lyn, I did my listening to Insiders while baking a couple of Banana cakes. :)

6/02/2011I love is it how you all love Laurie Oakes one minute and hate him the next. You call Barry Cassidy unbalanced on Insiders when he was an ex Labor Party staffer. Mark Latham was once your hero and now he is an evil Liberal lover. You shouldnt criticise someone on their looks, apart from if it is nikki Savva because she once batted for the other team. Andrew Bolt and other conservative commentators are bad, but left wing commentators are fair and balanced etc etc. Your hypocrisy is boundless! Your piece AA was once again a whole lot of rubbish. The conservative side of politics is no where near as extreme as that in the US; just as the left in Australia is no where near as far left as that in the US. Remember it was the conservative side of politics that bought back guns! The language used in the US is far more extreme than that used here. In Australia Abbott calls Gillard, "wooden", and Gillard calls Abbott, "extreme" and "disgusting", now i wouldnt call that extreme, violence inspiring language! Now i know you love drawing parallels between the Tea Party and the Liberals, but they are just totally different! It is like me comparing the Chinese Communist dictatorship with the Labor Party! On the issue of Abbott and whether he will survive; i dont believe he will be around before years end. When having to make the choice between Gillard and Abbott i chose Abbott; however i am a believer in the capabilities of Malcolm Turnbull, and i still believe he will become PM one day. I will give you a scenario: Later this year when Abbott's approval ratings drop, Robb will challenge Julie Bishop for the deputy leaders position. This move will spark action by Joe Hockey to challenge Abbott, as if Robb wins the deputy leadership position he will want treasury. A challenge for the Liberal leadership will be mounted, and it will be a two horse race between Turnbull and Hockey. hockey will be pipped at the post by Turnbull, because Turnbull has the gravitas, and statesman like qualities that are needed in a PM and Hockey doesnt. By the end of the year Gillard will have failed to implement a carbon tax and her mining tax and will be out of favour with the independents and the public. Oakkshott will jump ship to the Coalition, as will Wilkie and the Coalition will be in government by January. Just face it, Gillard does not possess the qualities that a PM needs: salesmanship, good political senses, a policy brain, and a great speech deliverer. If the public dislike her that much now, just wait until the great bucket of policy reversals is dumped on the Australian people! At least the Liberal Party has leadership options...Labor has no one.

6/02/2011jj, You went for Abbott because you thought his slogans would get you back into government, Turnbull who you now think is the "Prime Minister"in waiting got rolled!because everything he stood for the party hated. So now you tell us that when Turnbull becomes leader again and leads in his own right that everything he stood for will be embraced once again and everything that Abbott has done will have been for nothing! jj was it you ou your invisable friend who put the post up today?

6/02/2011
Lyn and Talk Turkey, Great summaries of Insiders.
Yers was useful too Feral. I reckon Cassidy did a pretty good job of gettin’ stuck into Abbott…Abbott made some errors because of the pressure he put on him by way of follow-up questions. sanqween thought same. My wife. Ya coulda knocked me down w/ a feather…I’m not used to Cassidy givin’ the Righties a grillin’. Speakin’ of “wooden”…I reckon Abbott’s nose coulda reached the camera’s like Pinocchios he told so many porkys. We know he read the entire email asking for donations. It was not a good one for Abbott at all. The rot has set in. Lenore Taylor & Dennis Atkins were pretty balanced all up. Not Nikki Sava…but she’s a Liberal hack. Worked for Costello…but even she acknowledged there are rumblings in the Coalition camp. When Cassidy pressed Abbott on whether people should give to the needy flood victims or the Liberal Party, Abbott stuffed up completely. A disaster. It’s a MUST watch. sanqween yelled at the TV: “He’s stuffed it…after all that lack of sensitivity…can ya believe how selfish & ambitious that man is?…he can’t tell his supporters just to give to the flood victims!!!…tells ya everything about him…defines the man…it’s all about him, him, him!!!” N’

6/02/2011Dear Mr Koch, Mr Mitchell, Mr Bolt, Mr Jones, Mr Abbott et al, Once a disaster had been declared in Central Queensland in recognition of the magnitude of the floods sweeping through the area, the first of several measures were brought into action. The Federal Government, our Federal Government (YOUR Federal Government) announced that Income Support Payments would be made to assist people who could not work as a direct consequence of the flooding. Bloody socialists, eh. Fancy providing $500/week/person just because they couldn't get to work!
Income support payments to assist people unable to work would also be available.
http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2011/s3128937.htm As the flood crisis widened this support was given to the remainder of Southern Queensland as, district by district, people began to be impacted by this massive disaster. Now parts of NSW, large swathes of Victoria and the North Coast of Queensland have been extended this same support in response to flooding and Cyclone Yasi. No doubt if sections of South Western Victoria qualify for disaster relief they will also be able to access these funds. On top of this, CentreLink is providing federal funds in the form of Disaster Recovery Payments to the tune of $1000/adult and $400/child for those who qualify by falling within a generous set of parameters. As of today, Sunday 6th February the bill is up over $400 million without taking into account Cyclone Yasi and South Western Victoria, $100m in welfare being paid every week
CYCLONE Yasi will push welfare payments made since the start of the year to half a billion dollars. So far for 2011, the sum of $100million is being granted to disaster victims every week. More than $421million in government disaster recovery payments has been made in five weeks and these figures do not take into account Cyclone Yasi. Centrelink has recruited 600 temporary staff in addition to their normal workforce to deal with natural disaster enquiries in January.
http://www.canberratimes.com.au/news/national/national/general/100m-in-welfare-being-paid-every-week/2067966.aspx A quick sum on the extra temporary staff might be informative as well. Six hundred employees at, let's say, $600/week = $360 000 per week just in wages. Should we discuss office space, computer and ancillary equipment, electricity and phone bills? Printer ink perhaps? Now, where do you reckon these funds are coming from? Remember this is the same government you have chastised for not being prepared for a vaguely foreseeable disaster, it is fair to say we could expect to have at least one flood or major fire or cyclone or storm event this summer. You may recall that there is a thing called the Contingency Fund built into the Federal Budget (yes, Kochie and Mitchell - the piggy bank with money "just sitting there" itching to be spent). If it has not already been drawn upon to supply money for these welfare payments, it most certainly will be before the next Budget is handed down. Once Cyclone Yasi is factored in, it would not be unreasonable to expect the over-all welfare bill to reach $1 billion. Do you recall, Andrew, bitching about the lousy $1 million contribution to the Premier's Disaster Fund made by the Gillard Government? Since then, a further $10 million has been dropped into that particular bucket. Remember that these are welfare payments made to individuals to off-set hardship, they are nothing to do with compensation or small business loans or primary producer support. And most certainly they are not related in any way to the rebuilding of infrastructure which will be required to get Australia back on its feet. So Kochie and Mitchell, still think we should be dipping into the Contingency Fund to help pay for the rebuild? I look forward to your apology for making such a stupid suggestion. Mr Bolt, do you still see the Federal Government's contribution to the well-being of its populace as being stingy? I look forward to your apology for making such a knee-jerk partisan suggestion. Mr Abbott, just what essential services would you now be cutting to cover the shortfall in the Contingency Fund because you were going to alter the formula and "save" $2.5 billion across the forward estimates? I look forward to the list of "fat" projects you would have found in your own budget. http://www.scribd.com/doc/36771897/Coalition-Costings These are relatively rough figures. Oh if only I had better resources and research skills like, say ... oh I don't know ... a professional journalist perhaps? A special note to Mr Abbott. Cyclone Yasi was a Category 5 Cyclone. It was not a "storm". In colloquial parlance, a storm might be as small as an average city block or as large as an entire city. A Cat 5 cyclone with an overall diameter of 1000 kilometres is NOT a storm. Your attempts to belittle even this aspect of the recent disaster disgusts me.

6/02/2011jj, Where do I start? Basically, it's great to have archiving on the site because I am so going to throw your crystal ball predictions back atcha in 12 months, after we see what has truly come to pass. :) Now, as for your Malcolm Turnbull the Second thesis. To the majority of Australians he is a Point Piper toff with zero ethics(Godwin Grech, Goldman Sachs & HIH Insurance deals). I understand that the ALP and the media have quite a dossier on him which was ready to go if there was an election against him. Instead he metaphorically shot himself before anyone else could, and so had to vacate the Liberal leadership. So, to advocate him for the leadership again, a la Howard, because he's the Gold Standard in recycled Liberal leaders, is, frankly laughable. The words 'Damaged Goods', immediately spring to mind there. However, I must say, that the so-called 'rumblings', via, it seems, this weekend's article by Phillip Adams in The Weekend Australian, wherein, supposedly, Labor MPs are speakingTrutat year, about Kevin Rudd being drafted to come back as PM due to JG's 'disastrous' performance over the Xmas break in Queensland, are also risible. It's not going to happen. Nor should it. Kevin was cut a lot of slack, but that's exactly what he ended up showing the electorate, that he was too slack to be Prime Minister. He refused to delegate, did not run a good Cabinet style government, and the Office of PM&C was a shambles where decision-making seemed to get lost in some Black Hole instead of coming out of there to the rest of the government.

6/02/2011Jason & FS, I am sorry but i cannot agree. The Liberal party didnt hate everything he stood for, remember, he only lost by one vote! Not everyone is like you FS, and judges peole by their postcode. Most Australian's like to have people who have succeeded in the business world to run the economy. So what if the Labor party has dirt on Turnbull! Gillard has the worst political past of any PM i can remember! As for the insiders stuff, sure what Abbott said might be getting a run in the left wing blogger-sphere but who reads that stuff apart from political junkies? What are the ratings numbers for insiders for that matter? Just think, you support a woman who destroys anyones career to pursue her own; Simon Crean, Beazley, Latham and Rudd. She is partly the reason for your beloved Labor Party losing so many seats at the last election. She is part of the reason for your party dumping the ETS. She is the reason for the citizens Assembly and the Cash for Clunkers etc etc. She is a failure...but you have no one to replace her!

Jason

6/02/2011jj, The sort of tosh you have posted again might look like reasonable stuff at the New England Nationals sub branch meeting but here it doesn't wash. Are you telling me Gillard's political past is worse than Howard's? "Most Australian's like to have people who have succeeded in the business world to run the economy." Really whats has Abbott done? And look at that High School drop out and former band manager Keating He's done more for our economy than either Howard Costello Abbott and even Turnbull have or would ever do. The only GREAT BIG NEW TAX WE GOT WAS THE GST jj your an opportunist you've smelt the political breeze realised Abbott is on borrowed time so you've come on here to convince yourself that you always supported Turnbull! Well I remember you saying was it last weekend Abbott will be PM by years end!

6/02/2011Folks It was a great party. I enjoyed reading your comments. I agree that Insiders was better than expected. I thought Barrie Cassidy was even handed and pressed Tony Abbott appropriately, exposing Abbott's shallowness and disingenuous. Viki Savva behaved like a Liberal operative, except when she criticized Brian Loughnan and his wife. As usual Lenore Taylor was superb and Dennis Atkins sensible. Julia handled her interview on Channel Ten well, continuing to show that she is not prepared to take cheek or tripe from interviewers. Michelle Grattan tried on a 'will you guarantee' question which got it's just deserts. Malcolm Farr was sensible. Overall I feel it was a good day for Julia and a poor one for Tony. jj's analysis is interesting. As usual his/her view of Julia was jaundiced. Nothing she does is ever right. Your reply FS to jj was on the money. Now watching the end of the cricket. It looks like being a good outcome for Australia.

6/02/2011jj, I don't judge anyone by the postcode of their humble abode, I was merely reiterating what I had read, just recently, about the general public's lasting impression of Turnbull. Also, if you class someone as 'successful in business' and thus eminently qualified to run the country, you obviously haven't come across the 'successful' businessmen that I have, and who have a lot in common with Mr Turnbull to my experienced eye. Also knowing what I do about his record as a businessman, the words, 'successful Shark', are more apt. I mean, can you honestly support a man who was prepared to almost denude a tropical island of its forrest, just to make a buck? I can't. Thus it is because of actions such as that, plus the fact he stacked the Branches of the Liberal Party in the electorate of Wentworth with his supporters, and yes, Labor people do exactly the same thing and I don't approve of it then either, in order to unseat a perfectly good sitting Member, that I don't have a very high opinion of his potential as a future Prime Minister of our country. Yes, Turnbull does have the courage of his convictions over the issue of Climate Change, but one swallow does not a Summer make. I guess, at the end of the day, I am a sad and lonely idealist. I just want good people to have stewardship of my country.

6/02/2011 And those behind cried "Forward!" And those in front cried "Back!" - Lays of Ancient Rome THOMAS BABINGTON MACAULAY English author, historian, statesman and poet (1800 - 1859) Anyone who watched Sunday morning TV saw Tony Abbortt being put to, if not exactly the sword, the suggestion of a gradual plucking of his little Budgie . . . Not the actual plucking, just the tweaking of the bulge a little . . . a suggestion of tickling it with matchsticks . . . lit ones! . . . and he knows he's in deep do-do, er uh ah, read his chimpy lips! (Apologies Cuz!) Cassidy actually put some real questions to him and Abbortt was a FAIL in spades. And that, friends, is like blood in the water. And when I say anyone who watched, that includes his hitherto sycophants - Hoo Hah, didja catch that jj's already ditched Abbortt? Doesn't take long for little sharks to find a wound in a bigger one, yum yum, chomp rip gulp, it's an ill political death that doesn't provide a chance of a feed for all the other hopefuls. But this will be a slower death, Abbortt holding on for grim death (yep!) and his mates circling . . . Julia Gillard stabbed Kevin Rudd? Just watch the bloodletting now in the Coalition! If jj wants a prognostication, well I might or might not agree that Abbortt will be aborted before the end of the year, but just glaum on the fun we will have in the meantime! The sharks circling, all eyeing each other, making alliances they have no intention of honouring if Machiavellian considerations point elsewise . . . the grassroots membership getting peeed off with their parties' failure and directionlessness . . . Labor gradually getting the wood on them (oughta be a pun on that for our "wooden" PM eh) and going steadily ahead in the polls . . . And as people start to get just a little bit undumbed, the sort of base that nearly put Abbortt in power will shrink little by little, and THAT will really have the Coalition panicking. They will have no idea which way to run, for they are without a coherent ideological credo. What will Turnbull do? His name is suddenly everywhere again. Robb? Pah. Snotty Joe? Our tame guru jj doesn't think so, but kids do like that Shrek thing . . . Poodle-Do, don't make me blurrrkkhh! The rest are really pretty obscure. And NONE of them is any bloody good. Turnbull has it all over them for gravitas, and he must be fulminating away, plotting . . . But even Turnbull is anathema to the Rotten Right. Too Wet. I don't like him neither, but I think he's the least weevil. He doesn't automatonically always say No. Which last has been Abbortt's position on everything, and which now is bringing him down. My guess is that the Victorians are feeling emboldened since their victory in the State election, and think they should strike while their irons are hot and Tony is making people's blood run cold. It's obvious someone has to go from the Liberal Leadership of Tony Abbott, Peta Credlin and Brian Loughnane. That's the fight that will be taken on by the Coalition first, before the Main Event. There is a problem, on both sides, conservative and progressive, that there is no compelling vision for the future of this country (and the world?) and, unfortunately, in this climate the destroyers and naysayers get a free ride.

7/02/2011I'd like to be dancing on Tony Abbott's political grave, but I'm not so sure he's in it yet, or even on the way. I think that, metaphorically, someone will have to put a stake through that man's evil heart before he goes down permanently, and the only ones that will ever get close enough are members of his own Coalition. Today's Newspoll numbers certainly are showing that there is a stubbornly resistant chunk of the electorate which will not abandon the Coalition after the last election, for some reason. Or, to put it another way, they cannot warm again to the Labor government, no matter what seems to go on that we may see the positives in. Then, there is the fact that the gap between Tony Abbott and Julia Gillard in 'Preferred Prime Minister' has Narrowed, and the Primary Vote of the ALP has gone further down into the 'Death Zone' at 32%. So, much as we may wish it to be so, that Tony Abbott should be being given the bum's rush, and know it should be different for the ALP for a host of very valid reasons. It ain't. I, for one an not buying a Party dress yet for the wake. There's still a very long way to go before we get to that point. I've still got my work clothes on and a shovel in my hand, and I'm going to keep digging the hole for him. :)

7/02/2011Newspoll made some interesting reading this morning. I thought that Labor might have pulled ahead a little, however it seems as though the rest of the electorate hasnt warmed at all to Gillard over the break. it is funny how everyone on this blog have been calling the death of Abbott for a long while now, and yet the Liberal Party have been close or ahead in the polls for a long time now. It seems to me that you are not at all connected with the views of the rest of Australia.

7/02/2011Stop Press!!!!! Bipartisan Tony is no more!!!!! Blathering on the 9 news that John Fahey's appointment indicates that Labor admits it can't be trusted with money. So much for all sitting down together to nut it out. He would have run that line anyway if he'd been allowed within a hundred miles of the budgetary process, not that it was ever going to happen. He wouldn't have been picked up for his double crossing if he'd run that line then, & I don't reckon he'll be picked up for his about face & double standard now.

7/02/2011I suspect could be the beginning of the end for Abbott - he is damaged goods. All that has to happen is for Gillard and Labor to remind the world about the "donate now" email every time Abbott criticises any announcement. Appointing John Fahey to the role of reconstruction overseer is clever on two counts - he has a reasonable reputation (primarily from the Sydney Olympics) and every time Abbott tries a "waste and mismanagement" line - the obvious answer is that Fahey approved it. The big question is will Gillard and Labor point out the bleeding obvious when the occasion presents itself? (The other option is that Tony Windsor or Rod Oakeshott suggested Fahey - which shows where the real political brains in the Country are!!). After I read JJ's latest proclamation I remembered Tony Windsor being asked on TV about Abbott's claim that the independents were going to "change sides". From memory the response was "Who's Tony think he's kidding?". I suspect the answer won't have changed in the past few weeks - Abbott is generally considered to be more than usually obstructionist, uncaring and selfish since the Queensland Floods. Desperation does funny things!

7/02/2011Hi BSA Bob
Bipartisan Tony is no more!!!!!
Abbott was never sincere.. Last week he was running around saying the Government had nobody in charge of the Flood Levy, nobody to complain to, so now they have, what does he say. This is all about trying to bring the Government down, before the new Senate 1st July. The words in the below link proves, Abbott's only aim is to try and prove the Government cannot be trusted. I guess Abbott will try to build up evidence somehow, then present to the Govener General, but I did think there had to be a vote of no confidence in Parliament first. 7/02/2011Norman K. David Koch writes a column and dispenses on television advice on matters financial... yet the man either doesn't understand or is being deliberately disingenuous with regard to the role of the Contingency Fund in the Federal Budget. I wonder if those who follow his advice are aware of his incompetence and/or mendacity. I think I'd rather keep my hard earned under the mattress than heed his advice .

It ain't. I, for one am not buying a Party dress yet for the wake." Start sewin' Girl. I'll send a pair of Liar-Bird tail-feathers for you to shake. Won't be long. The MSM and the Coalition are running out of pffffrrrrt-gas to keep his balloon inflated. They will be increasingly desperate and dithered as to what to do. Abbortt will NEVER go higher in the polls than he is now, it's all downhill for him from here, he's done his dash, nothing fails ya like failure. The delightful thing is, there's no-one obvious amongst those who would like to knife him who would do better . . . so the Coalition is in a Queen-trap of its own making. It cannot help but fragment. Who's to believe anybody in the Coalition after Abbortt implodes? What do they believe in? It bloody serves them right.

7/02/2011Graeme, As I have said before, there has become manifest, among the punditocracy and a lot of politicians, a new paradigm. They don't know the meaning of 'Wrong'! To admit that they had got something so wrong, when they had advanced it to their loyal camp followers on National television when 'interviewing' the Prime Minister, no less, and to have to make a humiliating backdown, would start the rot that would eventually lead to that particular individual being replaced in whatever position they occupy by a leaner and hungrier model. Of which there are always plenty waiting in the wings of TV studios. Not that their loyal audience know the hell what 'Kochie', the brand, as he has become, is going on about when he speaks about the Contingency Fund. However, when he characterises it as a 'Piggy Bank', well, any rube can understand the imagery. Which is all that counts. They also love it that 'Kochie', the 'Financial Whizz', smacked down the PM, and he has shown that he knows so much more than her. He knows about the Contingency Fund Piggy Bank, doncha know? "Good onya, Kochie!" QED. (I could write scripts for that Financial Failure, 'Kochie', in my sleep). :) Doesn't make for a valid political discourse though.

7/02/2011Is anyone watching 4 Corners? Did you hear O'Brien's introduction? " the wooden person we call Prime Minister" . . . and more about how she compared so poorly with Anna Bligh . . . It was all opinion, not fact, it was deliberately mischievous and malicious. It is payback for her having smacked him in the teeth for his disrespectful interview with her at the end of last year. Bastard! Remember my prescient line in "The Maid From Yarralumla" . . ? . . "There was sour Red Kez O'Brien, seemingly forever trying To skewer Julia with some subtle stab . . ." O'Brien is a bully and the ABC version of a TV Shock jock. He thinks It's All About Him. He has finally absolutely hitched his nasty little star to the Coalition. No wonder Maxine McKew quit HIS ABC. BRING BACK MAXINE! Yes indeed.

7/02/2011lyn, Sadly, if you watched Q&A you would have heard that it was the playwright, David Williamson, who was the first to use the term 'wooden' about the PM. He freely admitted it but complained that it was taken out of context by the media and politicians. He said he merely wanted to explain that a PM needs to be a salesperson and so he was suggesting that she not be so 'wooden' when making formal announcements. He also said that she was completely different in person and when making off the cuff remarks. He said that he only wished she was more like that when delivering scripted lines to camera.

What happened this afternoon and what does it mean in the context of what happened this morning and might happen tomorrow? What might happen tomorrow and what would it mean ....... ? It seems every man and his dog has an opinion and they're mostly not worth the candle. Of course, that's only my opinion.

8/02/2011Hi Ad There has been a lot more gaffes in this last week. Ask for donations to the Liberal Party’s campaign to fight the Government flood Levy. There is plenty of Fat in the budget says Abbott then tells Barrie Cassidy it’s hard to find the fat: They have just released this easy to find fat, they are deferrals, not cuts, so not really fat, because it’s necessary to cut fat off not leave it hanging otherwise it’s not saved is it, News Com. has called them cuts in their headlines. Sounds better for News Com’s agenda, to say cuts instead of deferrals. Here is the list: deferral of water buybacks The Opposition would defer $400 million of aid assistance to Indonesia, subject to a review. The Opposition will defer $150 million from the Building Education Revolution program for two years. $500 million to the automotive industry, bringing the assistance back to the levels of the Howard Government in 2007.
(“He said the Opposition had specifically chosen to defer, rather than cut, spending amounting to $2.095 billion over the forward estimates period”).

We are laying down a detailed plan that no Opposition has ever had the guts to do)
I missed the press conference, but from the ABC 24 report by journalist Gillian (forget her surname ), they are a bunch of clowns, circus act, getting more ridiculous every day. Looks like AxE the NBN is not on Abbott's Deferral list funny about that, not a mention of the NBN he has been harping about for what 6, 8, 12 months. Tony Abbott proposes cuts to BER, Murray Darling instead of flood levy , News Com The Opposition will defer $150 million from the Building Education Revolution program for two years. We are laying down a detailed plan that no Opposition has ever had the guts to do." http://www.news.com.au/breaking-news/tony-abbott-proposes-cuts-to-ber-murray-darling-instead-of-flood-levy/story-e6frfku0-1226002182774 Whiff of ad-hockery in Coalition budget cuts , Mark Davis, National Times
But drill down into Abbott's planned spending cuts and it turns out they are problematic on a number of grounds. Firstly, the headline number of $2 billion is to be delivered over the next four years: $791 million in 2011-12, $731 million in 2012-13, $442 million in 2013-13 and $102 million in 2014-15. But the government's levy is all collected in 2011-12. So if Mr Abbott's cuts were adopted instead, the budget would still be $1 billion worse off next financial year (albeit better off in the following years). Secondly, $1.2 billion of the Abbott-Hockey $2 billion are spending ''deferrals'' rather than actual cuts. The Opposition says it will defer $600 million in water buyback spending, $448 million in aid funding to Indonesia and $150 million in Building the Education Revolution spending. Reneging on a bilateral agreement and cutting funding to a strategically significant neighbouring country where per capita income is just $60 a week - all to avoid imposing a one-off tax levy which would cost Australian middle income earners less than $3 a week. It's hard to see anything charitable about this idea.
http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/whiff-of-adhockery-in-coalition-budget-cuts-20110208-1al73.

8/02/2011Lyn, Love your selective choice of an article by one person who has a problem with the deferrals put forward by the opposition...only because they are not cuts. None of what the Coalition has announced is extreme, so i have no idea what you are whinging about? ABC's 4 Corners last night had a very definitive pattern all the way through it; no one knows whether Julia is up to the job, and she has about as much political consistency as Anna Kornakova on the tennis court. From what i gathered from all of those interviewed: Gillard is a, Socialist... no, no a conservative... no, no, a pragmatist; she is for Temporary Protection Visa's...no, no, she is against them; she is for an ETS... whoops how silly, of course not, she is against one... oh but times have changes so she is for one again; she believes mark Latham will become a great PM... oh shit, no on a scale from one to ten, he is that bad that he doesnt even fit on the scale; and it goes on. She has no bloody idea what she stands for; who she stands for; or what she doesnt stand for. it became quite clear by the end of the show that she is a power hungry, gutless politician who wont let any back-flip or backstabbing get in her way; but as most of those interviewed said, she has got to the top job without every thinking about what she would do once she got there.

He came out with the 'Killer Line' before he manifested the 'Killer Response' to go with it. Upon attempting to put his thought bubble into action, it popped like a big bubble gum bubble all over him, leaving him coated in the sticky stuff and looking like a goose.

8/02/2011My take of 4 Corners last night was that over the past 30 years Gillard has had some opinions and when presented with some reason has changed them. Eminently sensible of her. I would hope that all readers of this blog site have changed their opinion on some closely held belief over the past 30 years - as the world has moved on. Still arguing over the world as it was in 1981 is pointless, won't achieve anything and lets face it will only make those who don't choose to move on bitter, conservative and twisted. Now if it's good enough for all of us - why isn't it good enough for Gillard? (Just thought - everyone has moved on, haven't they?)

8/02/20112353 Speaking of moving on - 'The man who views the world at fifty the same as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life' - Muhammad Ali. One would hope that our leaders take much the same approach. Indeed jj as well might like to heed Ali's advice. If I hadn't changed from the man I was at twenty, I would be still voting Liberal. We expand our horizons as we grow older, we see and hear things that cause us to rethink our beliefs, and we gain confidence in expressing our opinions; we come to value the opinions of others and, speaking from personal experience, find it easier to say 'I was wrong' or 'I'm sorry'. If Julia Gillard has changed her view of some things over her life's journey, I think that should accord her more bouquets than if she had stuck doggedly to outdated or unrealistic ideals. Leaders, while being able to portray strength, should not become slaves to inflexible thinking.

jj

8/02/2011Hey guys, if this was Julia Gillard you would be throwing conspiracy theories around, and be saying that she had been taken out of context. Sure it looks bad, but i dont know what he said before or after the edited version shown. The reaction he gave to the journo can be summed up as being angry! To compare him to mark Latham is just ridiculous! he hasnt assaulted anyone, nor is he an ego-centric dim wit. How about you just wait until the full story comes out, before you start getting your hopes up.

Joe Hockey was confronted with this on the 7.30 Report by Heather Ewart and of course defended his boss to the end. She was pretty tough in her questioning on this and other matters. Married to Barrie Cassidy, who himself was tough on Abbott on Insiders on Sunday, I wonder if there has been a change of tack towards the Opposition in that household.

8/02/2011"Channel 7 showed footage of Mr Abbott from today standing in silence and nodding gently for several seconds when he was asked to explain his remark." Yes but he wasn't nodding gently, he was APOPLECTIC, shaking with rage and dismay. He was JUST below exploding. I told you -didn't I ! - the man is deranged. He's GONE now. Praise Dog! I am right - aren't I? - that the ABC shamelessly truncated the whole performance, excising a whole lump from the centre? The Channel 7 clip is much longer, I'm sure, and the cut-and-shut that must be there on the ABC footage must be something special to see. It also shows Abbortt in a less awful light, the full thing is AMMM-AAAAA-ZINGGG! The longer Riley stands there waiting for an answer the worse the stupid ape (sorry Cuz!) looks. Can someone with tech sense quickly track the ABC footage down and compare with the original?

jj

8/02/2011It is becoming quite clear that he was taken out of context, and that channel 7 has tried to portray his comments as being in direct relation to the death of the Australian soldier. however it was not, and rather the conversation Abbott was having with the head of the area task force was about the provision of equipment; and as you heard the US chief said that everything that Abbott say whilst he was in Afghanistan was made available for the troops; and in response Abbott said, "well shit happens doesnt it". What he was saying was that even with all of the military equipment available, unforeseen events can still occur. The Channel 7 should be ashamed of its lack of presentation of the facts, and putting Abbott on the spot with a clip he may not have seen before, and expecting him to defend himself in front of a live camera!

Graeme

8/02/2011Oh dear. Fancy that, jj objects to the media taking a politician's comments out of context and not bothering to check their facts or do any research. Am I the only one who sees the irony in this?

Jason

8/02/2011jj, The remark itself is a nothing story, it's what happened after the question was asked that has become the story! Also if we were to believe your slippery response why did Abbott spend the last 3 months trying to stop the release under FOI? He knew it was comming but he seems to busy being the village idiot.

No good crying crocodile tears, no good pretending to be deeply sorrowful, if it weren't for the likes of exactly you Abbortt there would be no dead soldiers and no destruction in the lands we have invaded, kids burnt and blown to bits, same as Vietnam all over again, and Guess Whose side forced that on us too, and you know what Abbortt, on Sunday I went to my Vietnam Veteran mate's BBQ, and here's the kicker, I was one of the many who demonstrated in the city streets, - fought is not too strong a word - against the war, against conscription which your side Abbortt had to introduce because people hated the Vietnam War so much, the servicemen despised us then but you know what you creep, your mob turned their back when the veterans came home, your mob considered them as failures, it's the humanistic people like us old protesters who had and have sympathy for them in the end. It is You, Abbortt, who are are the excrement that inevitably eventuates. I still haven't ever used your 4-letter word on this public forum, I respect the folk here more than that, but it sure defines you admirably.

8/02/2011Perceptions, jj, perceptions. Tony Abbott has hitched his political wagon to that particular star for the last fourteen months - throwing unsubstantiated allegations and outright lies at the government in the hope that some of it will stick. Hoisted and petards come to mind. You may in fact be right - call me a moderate - and that within the context of the conversation in which he was engaged, his comment was, at worst, perhaps thoughtless. That's it for concessions. You said
putting Abbott on the spot with a clip he may not have seen before
and I have to ask why then have the Liberal Party sought to suppress the footage if he knows nothing about it? He has had months to come up with a half-way decent explanation and yet he was speechless. Speechless with anger no less. He was very very close to taking a swing at Riley (which Channel 7 would've loved!) and could not even manage his endearing "uh uh uh" while the cogs spun in his brain. Is this the man we want sitting down with world leaders, negotiating his way through complex issues some of which are going to rub him up the wrong way? He can't just get up and walk out of a G20 Conference like he does out of a press conference when he doesn't like the direction the questions are taking. This is not to defend Mark Riley or Channel 7 for the way they have handled this gotcha moment but we have seen once again that Abbott truly is a Tin Soldier (thanks FS) who "corpses" (as we say in the theatre) as soon as there is any deviation from the script. He can't think on his feet because his head is empty of original thought at the moment. Hence the slogans and mantras of "bad government" and "wasteful spending" etc. There are more than a few echoes of his "jet-lag" moment don't you think? Give you credit though, jj, you're a loyal trooper. Cue Tammy Wynette - Stand by Your Man. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwBirf4BWew

8/02/2011jj Jason is right. It was not that Tony Abbott uses the term s**t happens; it was his enraged and virtually mute response to Mark Riley's questions. He must have know what was in the video; otherwise why would he make such an effort to suppress it?

sawdustmick

8/02/2011Jason you are right, the remark he made is a nothing story however the fact that he froze infront of the camera and could not respond to Rileys' "how have I taken the the comment out of context? it the real story JJ has stated that, “It is becoming quite clear that he was taken out of context, and that channel 7 has tried to portray his comments as being in direct relation to the death of the Australian soldier. however it was not, and rather the conversation Abbott was having with the head of the area task force was about the provision of equipment; and as you heard the US chief said that everything that Abbott say whilst he was in Afghanistan was made available for the troops; and in response Abbott said, "well shit happens doesnt it". What he was saying was that even with all of the military equipment available, unforeseen events can still occur.” JJ, that would appear to be a reasonable take on what occurred, however, why the hell did Abbott freeze like a deer caught in the high beam of a car. He just stood there and said nothing and was about to punch Riley’s lights out. Not a good look for a bloke who believes that he ready to govern. Christ mate if he can handle someone like Riley with a half decent explanation then how would he handle a real crisis like the floods? Your final argument when you said, The Channel 7 should be ashamed of its lack of presentation of the facts, and putting Abbott on the spot with a clip he may not have seen before, and expecting him to defend himself in front of a live camera! Jason also blew your argument out of the water for as you know Riley and Channel Seven had been after this clip for about 3 months and therefore you assertion that he was unware of this clip is just crap. A so called leader has to be prepared to take all kinds of questions from the media and needs to be confident enough to make a reply even though it may not be a very comfortable admission of a mistake.

8/02/2011jj It really is quite amusing. When we defend any of our own against what we feel is unfair treatment by the media, you scoff at us. Yet you do the same. So don't be surprised if we scoff at you. Read what sawdustmick has to say.

8/02/2011jj, Simple question. If Tony Abbott had nothing to hide, why did he and the Liberal Party fight so hard, FOR 3 MONTHS, to prevent the footage from being screened? "Shit Happens". Hmmm. Now when did Mr Abbott use that phrase previously? Ah, that's right, when he was showing no respect to Nicola Roxon, a woman. "Shit Happens". The American General was pleading his feeble case wrt providing paltry air cover for our Diggers fighting on the ground, and all the obsequious US toady, Tony Abbott could say about the fact that their poor performance led to one of this nation's finest losing his life was, "Shit Happens". Not only that, but the mealy-mouthed bastard thinks that a quickie phone call to the fallen soldier's widow and a Press Release telling the media to "Move along, nothing to see here", is all that he needs to do to sweep the matter under the carpet so that he can get back to bagging the shit out of Julia Gillard tomorrow. He's pathetic. And, you know what, jj, so are you for trying to defend that piece of low-rent garbage.

Graeme

8/02/2011So, is the worm starting to turn? Why has Channel 7, not normally noted for their diligence when it comes to reporting, been digging the dirt on the opposition leader? Could they be responding to pressure from above, or have they suddenly developed a severe case of journalistic research? (I was going to say journalistic integrity, but the interview doesn't cast Mark Riley in a much better light than it does Tony Abbott.)

Feral Skeleton

8/02/2011Graeme, You are spot on. The irony, as I tried to point out to jj when he/she's comments came up earlier about Julia Gillard, is sickeningly sweet. Everything they purport to ascribe to the PM, or to absolve the Liberal Party of with the weak-kneed excuse that, 'The Labor Party do it too, and they do it worse', is frankly just gutless excuse making meant to cover their own exposed backsides.

He he...I've added an UPDATE to my post: Tony Abbott had his Frost/Nixon moment outside parliament today…pressured by Ch. Seven’s reporter Mark Riley on why he seemed to make light of QLD soldier Lance Corporal McKinney’s death in Afghanistan by saying “shit happens” to the soldier’s unit during his visit… Abbott stood on the grounds of parliament visibly shaking like an old man with palsy…nothing emerging from his gobsmacked self. The awkward pregnant pause lasted more than a minute as Abbott melted down…as tho his brain had been snap frozen then torched: http://au.news.yahoo.com/a/-/newshome/8799936/abbotts-afghanistan-gaffe/3/ Could this be the final gaffe for Abbott as leader, as his popularity will surely melt like his brain did…and his party will finally be forced take the knives to this mouth before wicket prone politician. 8/02/2011Another analytical comment from Aguirre at PB:
The issue here is the same one it’s always been. Abbott simply can’t think on his feet. Not even to the extent that he can defend himself when he feels he’s been misrepresented. Maybe you don’t need a statesman to run the country, but you do need someone who can manage themselves under scrutiny. I’ve never seen him manage himself under even the mildest of scrutiny. What he would usually do when something curly gets thrown his way is simply parrot the anti-ALP lines. He did a bit of that this afternoon in the presser. But in a situation where no comparison is possible, where it’s just about him, he presented us all with a vacuum. Thus demonstrating neatly that he, and by extension his party, doesn’t exist except as a negative image of the ALP. They took that route deliberately. They sheared themselves of any policy position they might have had under Turnbull, and focussed on becoming a mirror for Labor. They were all about what they wouldn’t do; whenever pressed about what they actually would do, they vagued out. That attitude took them right through the election campaign, and nearly gave Abbott the keys to the Lodge. That interview with Reilly – and to a certain extent what’s happened over the past week as well – is just the inevitable consequence of the path they took. Someone only has to ask him to explain himself – and stick at it until he does – and he’s going to go to water. This was about a comment he made – not even that heinous a comment under the circumstances – and yet he had nothing to say except that it was taken out of context. How? A minute of silence. He hadn’t thought that far ahead.
9/02/2011Watching the recording of Abbott jogged my memory. He went to Afghanistan that time for the same reason he went to Queensland- to "gather political ammunition". Now it's exploded in his face. I agree with others that the interesting (& terrifying) thing was his utter inabilty to counter an "ambush" that was apparently three months in coming. Discussing this with a friend, we both agreed we'd pay real money to know what was in his head as he nodded away. Wonder how the news of his budgetary deferments are being received in Indonesia? What was the line? Something about terrorist leaders stroking their beards & smiling? Lastly, the ABC appears to have finally received a graph Swan, Rudd & Gillard sent it a couple of years ago. It used an opinion by Adam Bandt (I think, it's been a long night & I'm tired) that the deficit could simply be extended a while to cover the rebuilding costs to get in what seemed like a mild swipe at Labor. The ABC displayed the graph showing that guess what? Australia has bugger all government debt in comparison to pretty much everywhere else. I don't know why we haven't been told this before.

9/02/2011The 7 reporter was on Sunrise early this morning. According to him the sequence of events is that usually the whole video of politicians is released on thier return to Australia. This time only ten or so minutes were. 7 asked for the rest using FOI as the video was shot by Defence. There were a couple of newspaper reporters at the site when it happened but no TV crews. Three months later (and after some attempts by Abbott's office to withhold it), the video is released to 7. 7 then askes for an interview. Around 3pm, Abbott's office asks what the interview is about and is told. The interview occurs around 5.30. It wasn't an ambush in the eyes of 7. Effectively Abbott had over two hours to "wargame" this as they obviously knew what was on the tape. That either they didn't or couldn't come up with an answer (as demonstrated by the 1 minute 10 seconds of "blissful" silence), demonstrates the workings of Abbott and his office. It seems that generally the media have turned on Abbott - regardless of his capability (and prophensity to mutter "shit happens" - remember the debate with Roxon in 07) I wonder how long it is before he becomes enough of a liability for the Libs to get rid of him.

9/02/2011To my eyes, and considering the full court press effort in backside covering by the Liberals and their mates in the media, what the events over the last 3 months since the incident occurred, and 24 hours since it was ventilated in the media, is that the Coalition are magnificent when it comes to crafting a story/line in hindsight, but hopeless in real time thought processing. We see them every day, from sparrow's fart in the morning, flooding the media with their carefully crafted Press Releases, and following it up with their expertly coached mouthpieces. It works a treat for them, and it is something that the ALP just isn't as good at. Next the Coalition machine chases down the ALP moves that have been made that day and they get to work dismembering them. They do this day in, day out, with metronomic efficiency. It pays big dividends. If only the ALP could work out the reverse ferret and call them on their obvious media manipulation more, and deconstruct their constructions. It's not that hard to do. I sometimes do it as a little intellectual exercise just to keep myself on my toes. All I do know is that the ALP are getting steamrollered by it, and they need to get a metaphorical front end loader to dump on the Coalition after they have done it to smother the effects of it.

9/02/2011I watched the first two hours of Sunrise today (usually I don't bother) & found Mark Riley’s explanation to be sincere…he did not ambush Howard…Abbott’s press secretary had been informed ahead of time…Riley was taken out to see Abbott…Abbott must;ve known the footage existed as he & the party fought to stop its release. This means that Abbott was uncomfortable w/ it…as once again demonstrated by his long long head shaking pause. For Koch on Sunrise to play such an apologist for Abbott – particularly when posts such as this demonstrate there exists a “pattern of behaviour” by Abbott that is unbecoming of a leader – it only goes to demonstrate how many well paid talking heads in the media are willing to kowtow to the so called “business party”. The phone poll results were also justified ridiculously by a host…in fact, phone polls give a poor indication of public sentiment considering that the people most likely to ring frantically in response to an issue like this are outraged coalition/Abbott supporters & members doin’ the astroturfing thing. And those who can tolerate ad-infested morning shows. Not as wide an audience as they may think. I was expecting a great deal of SPIN this morning…and it doesn’t surprise me the usual suspect morning show hosts, shock jocks & neswpaper columnists have gone on the attack…and are trying to turn this on Mark Riley…and make him look insensitive. We are seeing enormous hypocrisy from a group of critics who usually scream at the top of their lungs if information is not made public by a government. It should give many viewers & readers over time good reason to approach the mainstream media w/ caution…recognise their evident biases…and ask the question: “If the footage had been of Kevin Rudd & Julia Gillard, how would these same apologists have responded?” I think we know. I reckon the hypocrisy of some of the media re: FOI laws should really be focused on Murdoch’s group in particular as they go to court, spend money on undermining attempts by govt to stifle info… and focus on Abbott’s lack of preparedness…what does it say about him in a situation where he needs to think quickly on his feet?… what does it say about his team of advisors?… his casual apathetic approach to things?… has the over-the-top fitness stuff addled his brain? Aged him prematurely? Effected his thinking? Interestingly, GW Bush also tried to act “casual” & “tough”… he also cycled. And was sometimes MIA. Also a showpony. He drove America off a cliff. N’

9/02/2011Swordsfolks Despite the fact that Ad astra plainly would be quite pleased, in one way, to take a place as Non-Executive Director on the ABC Board, he has advised me that due to time and age restraints he feels he cannot accept nomination. I think it's a great pity, but even as I write it's not too late for him to change his mind. But of course, (of course!), it's entirely up to him. But it's also my prerogative to try "whatever it takes" to prevail on him, for the good of the nation, to go for it. I have sent him the letter below already, but it is not personal, it refers to Aa in the third person, and it was/is intended for whomsoever may feel themselves concerned, most especially the ABC selection panel. The strange thing is that, not knowing Ad astra personally, I feel almost MORE confident in the qualities he would bring to the position. Oh well. Folks you might feel moved to prevail a little on him to change his mind, but that's up to you. It's a slightly onerous job, if done conscientiously anyway, I recognize that, but the country would benefit from his input. It's actually a compliment anyway Ad, as I'm sure you'd know. If you can't you can't. [Here's my letter to Ad astra last night plus my letter to the ABC Selectors.] Ad astra, Read and understood. It’s not too late though – anyway my letter of support appears below. It really is a pity to miss the chance, you know. You could do such a lot of good! We all believe in you. (Here’s their applicants’ information) A merit-based selection process with the following features will apply for filling vacancies: 1. the assessment of applicants' claims will be undertaken by an independent nomination panel established at arm's length of the government; 2. vacancies will be widely advertised, at a minimum in the national press and the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy website; 3. the assessment of candidates will be made against a core set of selection criteria, supplemented where necessary by additional criteria as agreed by the Minister; and 4. a report will be provided by the nomination panel to the Minister with a shortlist of recommended candidates. 5. A broad definition of merit will be applied to ABC and SBS board appointments whereby formal qualifications and traditional work experience will form only one element. Non-traditional activities and career paths are recognised and valued as suitable qualifications which contribute to an individual's overall suitability for appointment. [TT says: All sounds reasonable yes?] Here’s what I’d have to say to the Board about you: Why I think Ad astra worthy of appointment as a Non-Executive Director of the ABC Let me first make clear that I am not personally acquainted with the person I know only as ‘Ad astra’. I have never met him, nor spoken with him on the telephone, and I am not even certain that the photograph which serves as his gravatar on The Political Sword (TPS), a blogsite of which he is host, is of himself. He could even be She for all I could swear to, though I do firmly believe him to be male, and will refer to him as such. This will anyway be resolved to all who have a right to know when the selection process commences. In the meantime none of these facts is critical to my opinion that he would be an exceptionally valuable appointment to the ABC Board. I base my belief on his voluminous and frequent writings, and the esteem in which very many people hold him. As far as I know, ‘Ad astra’ is a retired but energetic medical academic, surely as honourable a lifetime occupation as any. This in itself would be a valuable area of expertise to the ABC Board, and as relevant as any, given the broad merit criteria to be applied. I am also assured that he has much else to recommend him personally, but it is his work on his blogsite which is relevant here. And it is a matter of record, as is uniquely obvious merely by referring to the site itself. While there are some of us who might be criticised for intemperate or abrasive comments, Ad astra’s are invariably measured and moderate. He commands virtually universal respect among the many people who contribute to the blog. He has for several years given unstintingly of his time and wisdom to create and maintain a blog on which the most sensible and perceptive political and social comments are encouraged. He has a special ability to write conciliatory comments as well as substantial articles, and there are many who regard him as a sort of sage. However, many of those who write posts on TPS have hard things to say about the mainstream media, and the ABC itself is far from exempt from criticism. A great majority of us believe that Rupert Murdoch’s empire controls far too much of the media in this country, and that it is exerting distorting influence on the ABC itself. Recently the ABC’s proud claim to be “Your ABC” has been parodied, not without justice, to “Their ABC”, where “They” are the antiprogressive elements of the Right. This perception would be countered in clear terms if Ad astra were selected as a Non-Executive Director of the ABC Board. His standing is so high in the blogosphere that his presence there would do much to liaise issues between what are commonly termed the 4th and 5th Estates, and to allay suspicions that Auntie is dominated by the forces of reaction. I urge the selection panel to consider Ad astra for this appointment. [Probably Love's Labour's Lost but you never know!]

9/02/2011I think the best word to describe Abbott's behaviour in response to Mark Riley's questioning of him yesterday, is apoplectic.

9/02/2011Nasking, Of course the media, by and large, is on side with the Fe(de)ral Liberal Party. You only had to watch in awe as it cranked up, at a moment's notice, into gear last night and on into this morning. I just counted %+Abbott Coalition mouthpieces trotting out the Party Line for today, either on the Radio, TV, or at the doors of parliament. They had all bases covered. Thus, what has now become the story, due to deft manipulation of the media, is the media itself! Mark Riley from Channel 7 is, all of a sudden, the bad guy, not Tony Abbott and his smoke coming out of the ears performance. Now, that's slick professionalism from the Coalition machine men and women. Which includes their proxies in the media. As far as the ReCaptcha goes, don't sweat it. I was somehow supposed to input Hebrew into the box the other day! So, just press the reload button until you get something you can handle. :)

9/02/2011Feral Skeleton I can only agree with your comments about the speed with which the Saving Tony Abbott mission has been launched. It's infuriating that a media group prepared to actively misrepresent Gillard by selective quotation the day before will now insist on the "full story" i.e. full footage of the interview being aired, whilst ignoring Abbott's muckraking reasons for being there in the first place. Abbott's fact finding trip was a fizzer. The also want to brush out the most worrying issue, Abbott's truly weird response.

9/02/2011It is good to see most of the media has come around to their senses. Michelle Grattan spoke in defence of Abbott his morning, as did most other journalists. The context in which it was said is totally understandable, and really it shouldnt have ever been a story in the first place. Mark Riley is copping the criticism he deserves for his, LOOK IT'S ME MARK RILEY, routine. Just saw the first picture of Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. She is going to play her in a movie that should be released in the not to distant future. I hope she does her justice...because boy is she the sort of leader Australia needs now, i tell you, i cant even imagine gillard giving, "The lady's not for turning!" speech. Cant wait! http://www.pedestrian.tv/entertainment/news/first-look-at-meryl-streep-as-margaret-thatcher/34274.htm

9/02/2011 Folks Apologies for my absence from the blog so far today – it’s been a busy day. TT, thank you for your email and for posting the kind words you used in your reference to accompany an application for membership of the ABC Board, which as you state I have declined because of the additional work that would be required in preparing for and attending eight to ten meetings each year for the five years of the appointment. The complimentary remarks that you and Rx have made by email, and the comments bloggers have made about my suitability for the ABC Board, are heart-warming and will be placed among my treasured memories. Thank you. Folks, the fact is that the demands of TPS are onerous and increasing. When it started in September 2008, I would consider myself lucky to get half a dozen comments. Then it crept up to twenty and beyond and now routinely every piece attracts around a hundred comments and sometimes many more. My desire to respond to as many as I can is thwarted by the sheer volume, but you do help me greatly by responding so readily to each other. No doubt TPS will continue to grow. So I felt that in consideration of my large family, I ought to restrict my political activities to TPS. I am not a member of a political party, nor intend to become one. TPS is the one way I have of influencing political thought, and you, the visitors add immeasurably to the discourse that goes on here. Thank you. So I’ll just continue with TPS and hope it has an effect. TT, you suggested I comment on the ‘Abbott s**t happens’ saga. I have made some comments already, but I think I can respond further by placing below an email I intend to send to Mark Scott, MD of the ABC. It follows a series of comments about this matter made by Red Symons, breakfast presenter on ABC 774 Melbourne. Dear Mr. Scott I am writing to record my deep dismay at the behaviour of Red Symons on ABC 774 breakfast this morning. Let me begin by saying that I like Red, listen to him every morning, and find him both intelligent and entertaining. This morning however I felt he flouted the ABC’s promise of balanced and fair commentary on political matters by beginning his session with a statement to the effect that he found no offence in Tony Abbott’s ‘shit happens’ remark to soldiers in Afghanistan and left listeners in no doubt that he was on Abbott’s side and that he thought he was being unreasonably criticized. Even when talk back callers disagreed, he sought to counter their reasons and their argument. While this was contrary to ABC policy, it was other aspects that disturbed me even more. First, while many Australians would find using ‘shit happens’ in relation to a soldier’s death offensive, I suspect many would not, although they might wish for more dignified talk from a potential PM. But for Red to have focused on Abbott’s language was to miss the point. It was not Abbott’s words that attracted attention as much as his inability or unwillingness to answer Channel Seven Mark Riley’s question about the incident. But because Red had not seen the TV footage he made no reference to it; his focus was only on Abbott’s language. His research of the morning papers would have given him access to the actual video, had he looked. Moreover, Red did not know that the Liberal Party for three months had resisted the release of the video, which was taken by Defence personnel, and that Channel Seven had obtained it only after a long FOI process. Although a couple of talkback callers tried to inform him, it was only when Red spoke briefly with Jon Faine prior to the 7.45 news that he became fully aware of these essential facts. Had he known about them he might have been able conduct a more balanced discussion instead of his dogged defence of Abbott’s language when for many that was not the issue. So my disagreement with Red’s approach is not just his defence of Abbott, but his doing this while being aware of only half the story. Red rarely misses the point, but this time he did so badly. He exhibited gross lack of balance and bias based on his personal views, he used leading questions to talkback callers to encourage endorsement of his support for Abbott, did not want to listen to the whole story even when callers mentioned it, and in his conversation with Jon Faine, who put him wise to the full story, made a remark about Julia Gillard’s tears in parliament which I regarded as snide. If the ABC still wishes to promote its ‘fair and balanced’ approach to political reporting, it has been made much more difficult by the performance we had from Red Symons this morning Yours sincerely Folks It is clear that the usual media suspects have been mobilized by the Coalition camp to defend Tony Abbott. I noted that he fled to Alan Jones for an interview this morning but declined an invitation from the ABC’s AM for an interview, which program was at least balanced. What is disappointing is that a part of the ABC, OUR ABC, the Melbourne breakfast show, came out so stridently in Abbott’s defence. It was good to hear Jon Faine promoting a much fairer and more balanced discussion on his morning show.

9/02/2011BSA Bob, And by this afternoon the Coalition have misconstrued Abbott's apoplectic rage into a 'Dignified Silence'. Can you believe it? Of course, the ABC shill, Gillian Bradford, just sat there and let the Liberal mouthpiece say it, unchallenged. Of course, the craven Labor spokesperson there with Dan Tehan of the Liberal Party, didn't want to say anything nasty about Tony, for fear of bringing the wrath of the mediasphere down upon the ALP's head. I think it's instructive to read this comment about the ABC from today's Crikey, if you haven't already. Says it all, really well:
Brendan Donohoe writes: In the effort to achieve "balance" the ABC has thrown out the baby with the bathwater. This week's Q&A was a travesty. We endured the spectacle of Gerard Henderson -- apologist for and beneficiary of the mining lobby -- denying climate change and never brought to account. Richo blathered on about pensioner's heating that could be easily be supplied by alternative energy. Again he wasn't challenged on this. Ms Deveny, waaaay out of her depth, and bullied by Hendo on Christian bashing, was reduced to enacting a flaccid flirt piece with the "Deputy Dawg". Amanda Vanstone ... er ... couldn't concentrate but I recollect some pro-forma smoke-up-John Howard's-arse-action and, by default, the shambolic David Williamson almost made sense. The report in today's Crikey from Prof. Garnault that Australia is the world's laggard on climate change couldn't be more timely. We are laggards in terms of domestic co2 output. We are international vandals when one takes into account co2 we are profiting from in coal exports! As far as I can see, Mark Scott has reduced the ABC to a hapless polar bear. I recall that the polar bear's baby died in her epic and tragic swim to find solid ground. So too is the future of the nation's broadcaster doomed to sink and flounder in a sea of irrelevancy while Scott is at the helm.
9/02/2011jj, The only good thing that happened with Abbott is what most of us knew anyway! and that is he can't think on his feet,he's good at slogans, and if you remember before he went he was telling the government that the troops needed tanks etc!and was playing politics on the issue! "Shit Happens alright once the American commander told him they were well equipped, there went that line of attack! He's just an opportunist who for three months tried to hide what he was doing, yet lectures others about being open and transparent!

9/02/2011The problem with Red Symons is, he has become part of what he railed so effectively against when he was in Skyhooks. Part of the Establishment. He's fast losing his sense of perspective.

9/02/2011jj You say ‘the media has come around to their senses’. Did any explain how and why Tony Abbott was unable or unwilling to respond to Mark Riley’s invitation to Abbott to explain ‘the context’ of his remark, about which Abbott had commented at the beginning of the interview, accusing Riley of ‘taking the remark out of context’. Here was the perfect opportunity to give a cogent reason that might have resonated with the people. Instead he was mute, and for a long while. We have seen similar behaviour from Abbott in press conferences – when he dislikes the questions, and can’t or won’t answer them, he just winds up the presser and walks away. We know the Liberal Party fought the release of the Afghanistan video and that it took three months for Channel Seven to get it under FOI. Why the resistance? Presumably because they thought it would show Abbott in a less-than-favourable light. If that was so, why was Abbott not armed with a plausible explanation? Instead of standing there, nodding his head, he had the opportunity to defuse the situation. His office was given over two hours’ notice of what was to be shown, allowed Abbott to pick the time and place of the interview, yet he still couldn’t get his act together to head off a potentially damaging incident. If you think the majority of people are harping on the ‘s**t happens’ words, I think you will find you are wrong. What has dismayed people most is not Abbott’s language – we’ve heard those words from his lips before – or perhaps the use of them in reference to a soldier’s death, it is the inability or unwillingness of the man who would be PM of this nation to address an awkward situation and come out trumps, which good politicians are able to do. We worry how he would manage much more serious matters, especially on the international stage. If this is the best he can do over this relatively small matter, which if he had handled deftly would by now have evaporated into the ether, how would he handle awkward international matters on behalf of our nation? Perhaps you can reassure us.

9/02/2011If we thought last week's Insiders portrayed a fairer-minded Barrie Cassidy compared with last year, we should think again. Cassidy might as well be standing on the roof shouting : "Go Tony Go!" Rough days on a rolling campaign to nowhere
The Coalition was supposed to swagger back into Canberra ready to tear the government apart. But that hasn't happened. When question time finally rolled around, they had nothing. The politics of the levy are slipping away from them. How is it that given the terrible travails of the government since the "new paradigm" evolved, the Coalition has not opened up a substantial lead? And how is it that when Essential Media asked 12 questions related to character traits and capability, Gillard beat Abbott in every one of them? These are rough days for a government still finding its way and crippled by a history of wasteful spending, and yet the opposition seems incapable of exploiting any of it.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2011/02/09/3134481.htm What "terrible travails" Barrie? The passage of god knows how many bills through the parliament? The NBN legislation which was seen as crucial to its continued roll-out? Remember that Barrie? Passed. The Essential Media poll - you don't like Gillard so all of the rest of us should just fall into line, is that it? Perhaps Abbott fared poorly in the poll because that's what people think of him. "How can this be?" Barrie cries. Apparently the government is "crippled by a history of wasteful spending". Or perhaps it is getting on with the job despite the false perceptions of wasteful spending. This is partisan journalism at its worst.

The genuine, concern & quality of our commenters opinions, posted here, although, always enjoyable, I realise can sometimes be very time consuming, for you. 9/02/2011 abbott believes he should be PM yet he is unable to answer one question put to him. It may have been a trivial question as we all know that 'shit happens' is his fall back response when his brain slows down. Unfortunatly for Australia our wanabe PM looked like he was trying not to cry because he believed that what he had said to the soldier was tactless and he had been caught in another stuff up. But every things OK now murdoch will pull him out of the shit again.

9/02/2011jj If you still believe ‘the media has come around to their senses’, you won’t get much joy from the main channels tonight – Seven, Nine, Ten, SBS, and the ABC all gave a pretty disparaging account, not of Tony Abbott’s ‘s**t happens’ comment, but his behaviour during the interview when he refused to respond to the opportunity to explain the context of his actions in Afghanistan. Of course it will all blow over, but many, even some in the Coalition, will have their doubts confirmed about Abbott’s judgement and his ability to think on his feet, especially when facing awkward questions. We have all seen this before, and this episode will reinforce feelings of uncertainty about Abbott’s leadership capacity. Despite all the efforts of the Coalition and its media stooges to gloss over this matter and even blame the journalist or the media for the saga, people will store this in memory from which it will likely surface at crucial times – perhaps at election time.

Graeme

9/02/2011Watched PM Agenda today and we can be assured that the furore over Abbott's disturbing behaviour will blow over pretty quickly. How do I know this? Well, for a start, David Speers said so, and Matthew Franklin agreed with him. So we can be pretty confident that their respective outlets will be doing their best to make this story go away. Franklin offered the opinion that it was 'the TV guys' trying to get even with Abbott because he didn't take any of their cameramen/women on his Afghanistan trip. Maybe he's right. The MSM took a very dim view of Kevin Rudd when he tried to control the flow of information to them.

Jason

9/02/2011Graeme, Franklin for all the good he is should be the coalition's press sec!All the right wing journos who it would seem have rather short memories! Today they say Abbott was around men talking like men do! OK I'll concede that point so why then when Rudd went with men to a strip joint his whole being was called into question?

Ad astra reply

9/02/2011Graeme, Jason Yes it will blow over - such news has a very short life. But the episode will stick in people's memories. The rusted on Abbott/Coalition supporters will wonder about him but stick with him; the uncommitted will store this episode and it will pop up unexpectedly when decisions about who to support arise. It won't go away; it will fester. It may end up being his 'Latham moment'. Latham had several - all noteworthy for their naivety and oafishness. Abbott is rapidly catching up.
